Phase II, Dulles Metro Rail

The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project (DCMP) is undertaken by MWAA in partnership with Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, as well as the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Phase 2 of the DCMP starts from the Wiehle-Reston East Station and will extend the Silver Line 11.4 miles west into Loudoun County, VA.   It will include six new stations, Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Washington Dulles International Airport, Route 606, and Route 772 Ashburn. Five of the new stations will be built on ground level.  An aerial station will be constructed at Dulles International Airport.


DMY is currently working on this project providing both field and engineering services including geotechnical drilling, rock coring, rock pressuremeter tests and data analysis, borehole logging and field work coordination.  Special challenges include very stringent drilling fluid and siltation control requirements, complex field work coordination with the Design-Builder, MWAA, VDOT and other team members.  DMY, as one of the few geotechnical companies with the expertise of rock pressuremeter testing and data interpretation, successfully performed rock pressuremeter tests in boreholes down to 65 feet deep in challenging geological conditions and obtained valuable data to support the deep foundation design.

Interstate 66 Active Traffic Management

The $38 million project will install an active traffic management system on a 34 miles stretch from I-66 through Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William counties from the Washington, D.C. line to Route 29 in Gainesville.


The system will improve safety and incident management and include new sign gantries, shoulder and lane control signs, speed displays, incident and queue detection, and increased traffic camera coverage. Drivers will see the new overhead sign gantries installed between the Beltway and Route 29 in Centreville.


DMY is currently working on this project to provide QC inspection and testing services during clearing & grubbing, E&S controls, MOT, subgrade preparation, backfill, asphalt, concrete, and foundations.  DMY has provided a QC Manager, QC Coordinator, and several inspectors to ensure the proper compliance of the work with VDOT requirements.

DC Water Main Process Train

DC Water recently completed work at the Main Process Train of the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. The design-build project included the rehabilitation of four solids blending tanks, installation of 12 new strain screens in a new screenings building, a pre-dewatering building that houses 10 pre-dewatering centrifuges, four trains of Cambri’s thermal hydrolysis treatment (THP), a digester building including pumping and cooling heat exchangers, and the construction of four 3.8 gallon digesters and associated odor control equipment.


DMY provided construction materials testing and special inspection services. The work included field and laboratory testing for soil and aggregate, concrete and grout sampling testing, and inspection of the installation of 477 auger-cast-piles and 144 drilled piers. This was the first project where DMY implemented DMY Manager®, its web-based electronic management and report system. This system allowed DMY engineers and field staff to efficiently manage the project and effectively control the quality of the deliverables.

Justice Park Residential Redevelopment

The project consists of demolishing the existing Justice Park and constructing a new five-level residential building with a partially below grade parking and a penthouse for mechanical equipment.  The footprint of the proposed building is approximately 85 feet by 145 feet with a gross floor area of about 50,000 SF.  DMY provided geotechnical engineering services including soil test drilling and sampling and provided geotechnical recommendations.


DMY worked closely with the environmental consultant to implement a combined field program consisting of geotechnical exploration and a Phase II ESA sampling and testing to reduce the overall design costs.   Prior to contract award, DMY performed a comprehensive site reconnaissance and prepared numerous alternatives for site access and subsurface exploration.  DMY also assisted the design team with local engineering requirements as well as concerns unique to the site, which the client was not aware of.  This early and active involvement in the project beyond just the geotechnical engineering scope provided the client foresight to avoid potential pitfalls and ensured a smooth project design and development process.  DMY also worked closely with the structural engineer and ultimately recommended supporting the proposed building on shallow foundations bearing on compacted aggregate piers to save time during construction, increase footing bearing capacity, and reduce potential long term risks to the proposed building and the adjacent structures.

Simon Elementary School

This project used geotechnical engineering services to support the design of the Simon Elementary School Playground project in Washington DC.  The new features included two rain gardens, two bioswales, pavement areas, trails and an amphitheater. A total of seven infiltration tests were conducted for the rain gardens and bioswales. Infiltration test borings were drilled to about two feet below the anticipated facility bottom to perform the field infiltration tests. DMY also drilled four soil test borings varying from 5 to 10 feet in depths at the pavement and amphitheater locations.  Subsurface soil/rock and groundwater conditions were obtained at each of the boring locations. Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were conducted in all the borings to check for soil strength.


DMY provided geotechnical engineering services on this DGS/DDOE/DCPS pilot program.  As part of initiatives to rehabilitate local rivers, Simon Elementary School Playground renovation project served as a pilot showcasing opportunities for marrying play and sustainability. The proposed construction reduces pavement and introduces rain gardens for cleansing and infiltration, and incorporates a variety of play features including a basketball court and hard surface play areas, play equipment, and climbing mounds.
