OUR INNOVATIVE APPROACH

Our approach to addressing your geotechnical project needs is pretty simple – regardless of the complexity of a project. That’s because we follow a proven process, tailored to meet your project’s unique challenges, to deliver superior results.

An agile framework for our innovative approach to providing geotechnical solutions is below:

Developing an Effective Geotechnical Investigation Program

At the beginning of each project, DMY performs an initial review and evaluation of a project’s design plans and all relevant geotechnical data that exists. This comprehensive data review enables us to develop the most efficient and effective geotechnical investigation program possible, tailored to the specific needs of the project.

Typical resources for geotechnical data may include:

  • USGS Geological Maps
  • The local Soil Survey data, as published by NCRS of USDA
  • Prior preliminary geotechnical information and nearby geotechnical information from our company database or client records

Refining Through Reconnaissance

To refine the geotechnical investigation program, we conduct a site reconnaissance. A geotechnical field investigation may consist of standard penetration test (SPT) borings and rock coring, pavement coring, field infiltration testing, and groundwater table determination. Field investigation may also include bulk soil sampling, undisturbed soil sampling, and groundwater monitoring and sampling. Geophysical techniques such as seismic refraction, ground penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity may also be considered, as appropriate.

Program Implementation

Implementation of the geotechnical investigation program takes place from our office in Chantilly, Virginia. Utilizing our in-house drill crews, we are often able to complete the majority of field investigations within our own office, making our process incredibly efficient. Depending on the site access, we will mobilize either a truck-mounted or track-mounted drill rig, either of which has SPT testing with automatic hammer and rock coring capabilities.

Managed by a Team of Industry Experts

An experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer serves as Project Manager for all of our geotechnical programs. We employ streamlined communications to ensure maximum efficiency, having the Project Manager serve as the point of contact for the design team, as well as the client/owner. Field investigations are supervised by an experienced field engineer or geologist and a Principal Engineer is actively involved throughout a project’s lifetime, for both QA/QC and senior review of intermediate and final deliverables.

From Concept to Completion … and Beyond!

Upon completion of field investigations, we perform laboratory tests on collected soil and rock samples in DMY’s AASHTO certified laboratory. The laboratory testing program may consist of natural moisture content, USCS soil classifications, Proctor compaction, CBR, direct shear, consolidation test, unconfined compressive strength of soil and rock samples, as well as pH and resistivity tests. All tests are performed in accordance with pertinent VTM or AASHTO standards. If necessary, DMY engages qualified subconsultants to perform certain specialty laboratory tests. The laboratory test results are used to support the geotechnical engineering analyses and recommendations for a project.

We take pride in serving as an engaged partner for our clients, providing expert guidance along every step of a geotechnical project’s path. And our commitment to your satisfaction means that after a final geotechnical report is issued, summarizing a project’s geotechnical data and providing geotechnical recommendations for the project’s design and construction, we make it our priority to work closely with the design team and our client to address any residual feedback.
