DC Water Main Process Train

DC Water recently completed work at the Main Process Train of the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. The design-build project included the rehabilitation of four solids blending tanks, installation of 12 new strain screens in a new screenings building, a pre-dewatering building that houses 10 pre-dewatering centrifuges, four trains of Cambri’s thermal hydrolysis treatment (THP), a digester building including pumping and cooling heat exchangers, and the construction of four 3.8 gallon digesters and associated odor control equipment.

DMY provided construction materials testing and special inspection services. The work included field and laboratory testing for soil and aggregate, concrete and grout sampling testing, and inspection of the installation of 477 auger-cast-piles and 144 drilled piers. This was the first project where DMY implemented DMY Manager®, its web-based electronic management and report system. This system allowed DMY engineers and field staff to efficiently manage the project and effectively control the quality of the deliverables.

DC Streetcar – H Street, NE/Benning Road Line

This design-build project includes the construction of the western and eastern termini of the route for the streetcar, the overhead catenary that will deliver power to the streetcars, and the Car Barn at Benning Road-26th Street.  The first segment of the project includes laying out the track, utilities, retaining walls, and other associated site work.  The second segment of the project includes the construction of Car Barn building and maintenance yard.

DMY has been working on this project providing Quality Control construction materials testing and special inspection services which include field and laboratory testing for soil and aggregate, concrete and grout sampling and testing, and inspection of the bridge deck repair and drilled shafts for pole foundations.   DMY implemented its web-based electronic management and report delivery system – DMY Manager® to efficiently manage the project data.

Additionally, DMY prepared and is currently implementing a two level vibration monitoring program on this project for eleven (11) specified facilities along the project alignment.

DC Water – Biosolids Management Combined Heat and Power Plant

The Combined Heat and Power (CHP) project will make the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (AWTP) the first in North America to use biogas from an AWTP facility.  The design-build portion of the CHP project is for $81 million and, upon completion; it will produce at least 14 MW of electric power that will supply the Blue Plains facility with nearly 30 percent of the AWTP’s average power demand. This is equal to the electricity required to power more than 8,000 homes.

The plant will also include three Solar Mercury 50 low nitrogen oxide gas turbines, digester gas cleaning and compression equipment, heat recovery steam generators, duct burners, a backup boiler, and electrical equipment needed to operate in parallel with the utility grid and ancillary systems.

DMY is currently working on this project providing special inspection and construction materials testing services which include field and laboratory testing for soil and aggregate, concrete and grout sampling and testing, and inspection of the installation of auger-cast-piles.  Structural steel inspection is also a major part of special inspection services.
